« Go BackHavrilla, George

HavrillaGeorge Havrilla was called to heaven on Sunday, December 11, 2011 in Cedar Rapids, IA, surrounded by family. Born January 3, 1924, George was a long time resident of Harrisburg, PA. He retired from the Harrisburg city police force after 20 years of service. He was honorably discharged from the Army, having served in World War II with the 94th Infantry Division, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He received two medals for meritorious service.  He recently participated in the Honor Flight from Iowa to Washington DC for veterans, to see and experience the new WWII monument. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Harrisburg, Holy Rosary Council, 869. At the Rutherford House, he participated in a number of activities with friends including the singing group “Sentamentalists.” George was an active member of Holy Family parish for 43 years and participated in a number of ministries particularly as an Extraordinary Minister. He was married to Agnes Gerboc Havrilla (deceased 2005) for 55 years. George is survived by his children, George, John, Pauline Tsamis, David, and Maria DiFrancesco. He is also survived by sisters, Agnes Reggie and Ann Granteed. In addition he has 12 grandchildren, George Havrilla, Gloriane Havrilla Ortega, Meredith Havrilla Dalrymple, John and Kathryn Havrilla, Eugenia Tsamis Prescott, Katherine and Nicholas Tsamis, Sera and David Havrilla and Anthony and Noelle DiFrancesco. He has one great granddaughter, Claire Marie Havrilla. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 11 AM. Services will be held at Holy Family Church, 25th & Berryhill Streets, Harrisburg, PA 17101. Viewing will be Friday, December 16, 2011, from 6 to 8 PM at the Gilbert L. Dailey Funeral Home 650 S. 28th St., Harrisburg PA 17103, Phone: (717)-233-1933. George will be buried at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA. Memorial Contributions in lieu of flowers, in the name of George Havrilla, can be made to either; Hospice of Mercy, Mercy Foundation, 701 10th Street SE, Cedar Rapids, IA, 52403.
